The Ball at Walmer Castle
Dear Readers, If I could describe my visit to Walmer Castle in one word, it would be magical. Tucked along the coastline in Deal, England, this historic castle has everything: gorgeous views, fascinating history, and gardens that felt almost cinematic — like I’d stepped straight into an episode of Bridgerton. Exploring England feels like stepping into a period drama, and this day was no exception. From the moment we boarded our coach to our arrival at Walmer Castle, I felt like I’d been whisked into the world of Bridgerton. The stunning architecture, lush gardens, and coastal charm made it a day I won’t soon forget.

Our first stop was Walmer Castle, a historical gem that felt like a portal to the past. We started in the private living quarters, which are usually closed to the public. It was fascinating to see how history and modern life intertwine in these rooms. The antique furniture, historic art, and intricate decor told stories of centuries gone by, while small, modern touches reminded us that people still use these spaces.
After touring the interiors, we made our way outside to explore the castle’s gardens, which were the highlight of the day. Walmer’s gardens are nothing short of magical—every path seemed to lead to a new discovery. There were neatly trimmed hedges forming geometric patterns, colorful flower beds bursting with blooms, and even a lush kitchen garden that felt like it came straight out of a Victorian novel. I could’ve spent hours wandering through the serene pathways, stopping every few minutes to take photos or sit on a bench to soak it all in.

One of my favorite spots was the Queen Mother’s Garden, designed as a tribute to her. It was peaceful and elegant, with a central pond surrounded by vibrant flowers and perfectly manicured greenery. The smell of roses lingered in the air, and I couldn’t help but imagine what it must have been like to stroll through these gardens centuries ago, dressed in a flowing gown, with no worries beyond the latest gossip.
Once we’d had our fill of the gardens, we walked down to the waterline, where the view was just as captivating. The pebbled shoreline stretched out before us, and the rhythmic sound of waves meeting the shore was the perfect soundtrack to a peaceful moment. We couldn’t resist the temptation to pick up a few rocks and toss them into the water—it’s the simple joys like this that make these experiences so memorable.
From the waterline, we set off on a walk along the coastline to Deal, a quaint seaside town with its own unique charm. The stroll was refreshing, with the sea breeze keeping us company and the views of the coastline adding to the beauty of the day. In Deal, we wandered through the shops, soaking in the small-town vibe and browsing everything from souvenirs to retro cameras.
Of course, no seaside visit would be complete without fish and chips, and Deal delivered. We sat on a bench overlooking the water, trying to enjoy our meal while dodging determined seagulls that clearly had no sense of personal space. As a final treat, we grabbed gelato before boarding the coach home. The creamy sweetness was the perfect way to end the day.
The drive back was filled with quiet chatter while others napped from the exhaustion that comes from a day well spent. Walmer Castle, its gardens, and the charming walk to Deal made me feel like I’d stepped into another era, even if just for a few hours. England has this incredible ability to blend history, beauty, and simple pleasures into every experience!
